Pattern, process, and function in landscape ecology and catchment hydrology – how can quantitative landscape ecology support predictions in ungauged basins?

چکیده

The understanding of landscape controls on the natural variability of hydrologic processes is an important research question of the PUB (Predictions in Ungauged Basins) initiative. Quantitative landscape ecology, which aims at understanding the relationships of patterns and processes in dynamic heterogeneous landscapes, may greatly contribute to this research effort by assisting the coupling of ecological and hydrological models. The present paper reviews the currently emerging rapprochement between ecological and hydrological research. It points out some common concepts and future research needs in both areas in terms of pattern, process and function analysis and modelling. Focusing on riverine as well as semi-arid landscapes, the interrelations between ecological and hydrological processes are illustrated. Three complementary examples show how both disciplines can provide valuable information for each other. I close with some visions about promising (landscape) ecological concepts that may help advancing one of the most challenging tasks in catchment hydrology: Predictions in ungauged basins.

Towards a new generation of hydrological process models for the meso-scale: an introduction

The main motivation for this special issue of Hydrology and Earth System Sciences is the IAHS decadal research initiative “Predictions in Ungauged Basins” (Sivapalan et al., 2003), and more specifically the need to develop hydrological models that work for the “right reasons” (Kirchner, 2006). This means that a model shall “work” because its structure is based on appropriate representation of t...

Using the Component Model of Sustainable Landscape for the Quality Assessment of Urban Natural Public Spaces: A Case Study from Tehran’s River-valleys

Ecological destruction in human-dominated landscapes has significant impacts on environment sustainability internationally. Landscape planning can play a role in mitigating the effects of human-related activities. One element of landscape planning involves the analysis of the biological, spatial and social arrangement of areas in an urban environment and identifying characteristics that are und...

بررسی دو شاخص کمی کردن الگوهای چشم‌انداز با استفاده از RS و GIS در منطقه حفاظت شده موته

Landscape ecology as a modern interdisciplinary science offers new concepts, theories, and methods for land evaluation and management. One main part of landscape ecology is describing patterns in the landscape and interpreting the ecological effects of these patterns on flora, fauna, flow of energy and materials. Landscape studies require methods to identify and quantify spatial patterns of lan...
